The new unit took over responsibilities both for providing aviation support to the 2nd Infantry Division and to the Eighth US Army, replacing both the 6th Cavalry Brigade and the 17th Aviation Brigade. 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry was subsequently inactivated, later being ractivated as part of the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. 3rd
